Calm your mind while drawing the Sonoran Desert in the soft gray values of a Pilot water-soluble ink pen.

In this class, Tucson artist Saraiya Kanning will teach you the foundational principles for ink drawing, including how to create the illusion of light and dark using various mark-making. You'll also learn the fun trick of playing with ink washes by using water-soluble pen and a brush.

The saguaro-studded hills of Tumamoc will lend  inspiration for your drawings.

Format

On the Zoom web platform, Saraiya will begin the class at 9 am and teach through a combination so demonstrations and lectures.

Supplies

  • Pilot V5 ink pen, extra fine
  • medium-sized round brush (size 8-10)
  • 140lb watercolor paper, loose leaf or in a sketch pad
  • HB or 2B graphite pencil
  • kneaded or white eraser (I prefer kneaded because it doesn't leave flakes behind)

Schedule (all AZ time)

Saturday

9 am to 11 am — live instruction / demos on Zoom

11 to 1 pm — students leave and go out and work on an assignment. [Lunch during this time as well]

1 to 3:00 pm — return to Zoom instruction and discussion, with a Q&A as well.

Results

By the end of class, you will have new skills you can use in your field notebooks and nature journals using a simple water-soluble pen.
